Course Overview

Our Overview of Stammering Training Course is effective in supporting young children and their families who stammer. This course will provide an overview of stammering by identifying what stammering is, what we know about stammering, the different types of stammering and the characteristics of stammering. We will look at the Multifactorial Model (2008) and The Palin Model of Stammering (2019) and how physiological factors, speech and language, psychological and environmental factors have an impact on stammering and the changes made from updated research. We will also look at some strategies on how best to support children in the setting and identify what helps and what doesn’t help a young person who stammers

Why is it important to take this course?

Stammering is a speech disorder characterised by involuntary repetitions or prolongations of sounds, syllables or words, or by involuntary hesitation or pauses that disrupt the rhythmic flow of speech - World Health Organisation, 2001.

If you have a child or young person in your setting who stammers and you do not have much knowledge about stammering or are unsure of how best to support the child or young person this overview of stammering course will provide you with an understanding of stammering and how best to support the child.

If an individual does not have the knowledge on how best to support a young person who stammers, it may provide negative experiences and impact on the young person’s self-esteem and communication and interaction skills. If not fully supported a young person who stammers may be reluctant to speak.

It is important to acknowledge that stammering is not to be perceived as something that is ‘bad’ and that it is okay to stammer. A stammer does not define who the child is as a person and they are good communicators too.

  • Characteristics of stammering (e.g. part word repetition, whole word repetition, prolongations, blocking, facial tensions, body movements etc)
  • How you can help a young person who stammers – what helps/what doesn’t help
  • Overview of therapy in clinic sessions
  • Where to access further support (websites etc)

Our Overview of Stammering training course, is perfect for education and childcare professionals, such as teachers, teaching assistants and SENCO’s working with children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN). The course is also suitable for speech and language therapists, undergraduate and postgraduate students who are undertaking a degree in the field and looking for support and more information.

FAQ

  • Around 8% of UK children will stammer at some point in their lives and 3% of the UK adult population stammer, many children recover naturally or with support (Yairi and Ambrose, 2013)
  • Stammering is often called stuttering and dysfluency – it’s all the same. While initially it may affect boys and girls equally, later there are 4 or 5 times as many boys than girls who stammer (Stamma).
  • Stammering usually starts in childhood between 2 and 5 years of age – it may be sudden or gradual onset (Stamma)

Our training courses are perfect for education and childcare professionals, such as teachers, teaching assistants and SENCO’s. The course is also suitable for speech and language therapists, undergraduate and postgraduate students who are undertaking a degree in the field wanting to learn about how they can support pupils in the classroom or their setting.

Our training and therapy programmes are designed to effectively target the following areas:

Universal 

Focus on establishing supportive communication environments at home and in school, thus providing consistency. 

Targeted

Create bespoke therapy sessions for individuals or groups, either as a single occurrence or ongoing input. We can also train parents and staff to deliver these programmes. 

Specialist

We actively promote quality-first teaching, and can conduct a full or part audit of your staff and school environment to help tailor our programmes to your needs. 

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our training courses will be taking place online via Google Meet. All relevant support information for accessing the course will be sent out to attendees prior to the course.

We accept all major debit/credit cards via Stripe and Paypal. We have an invoice option for education-based settings, schools and organisations.  Please select the Pay by Invoice option via checkout and a member of staff will contact you and send the appropriate department the invoice to pay.

Once completed, and we receive your order we will process the payment and send you an invoice request, once the payment has been paid we will send you confirmation and details to access the course directly. Please note if you are booking on behalf of someone else or a colleague please ensure you include their email address and contact .

Once you have completed the training survey, and the training course we will provide you access to the training recording, as well as any resources (if applicable). The recording will only be available for 2 weeks from the date this is sent.

We can deliver a bespoke training programme to your staff. We deliver our training courses face to face in your setting and are commissioned directly by schools, nurseries, and academies. We work alongside trusts and clusters of schools to deliver the training programmes that you require. If our scheduled courses do not fully meet your requirements, we are happy to develop bespoke courses to meet the needs of your workforce and setting of a time and date that work for you.
