Course Overview

Talk Boost KS1 is a targeted intervention for 4-7 year old children with language that is delayed, including children in Reception classes to make significant progress with their language and communication skills. The programme is delivered in primary schools by classroom teachers and teaching assistants and provides a structured programme that boosts children’s progress in language and communication by an average of 9 - 18 months after a ten week intervention.

Children who are selected to take part in the intervention will attend three sessions per week in small groups, each lasting 30-40 minutes delivered by the teaching assistant. The sessions include activities that cover the key elements of language: Attention and Listening, Vocabulary, Building Sentences, Telling Stories and Conversations. In addition, the teacher will run a weekly whole-class activity and there are activities that can be practiced at home.

Why is it important to take this course?

Talk Boost KS1 is a language intervention for 4-7 year olds, delivered by a trained teaching assistant
3 times per week for 10 weeks, with linked whole class activities. It boosts the language and
communication skills of children who have not had the opportunity to develop their language skills
either through lack of good language models in their early years or because they are learning English
for the first time

Children who have intact language learning ability but who have not had the opportunity to develop
their language benefit best from Talk Boost KS1. We refer to this group of children as having
delayed language; their language is delayed compared to their age equivalent peers but they have
no internal difficulty which would hinder them from learning language.

Talk Boost KS1 is a targeted intervention. It can be carried out by a trained teaching assistant with
whole class activities delivered by the teacher. It comes with a tracker which allows before and after
measures to be taken to show progress

Ofsted now evaluates how well pupils develop and apply their skills in communication and how well communication is taught. They also focus on how schools narrow the gap between children with the lowest and highest attainment. Talk Boost KS1 helps schools develop children’s communication skills, narrowing the gap between 4-7 year olds with delayed language and their peers.

ICAN Talk Boost KS1 training course, is perfect for education and childcare professionals, such as teachers, teaching assistants and SENCO’s working with children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).The training is suitable for reception, year one and year two teachers and teaching assistants. Participants will develop the skills and knowledge to understand the rationale behind Talk Boost KS1, identify appropriate children, measure their progress and deliver the intervention successfully.

The course is also suitable for speech and language therapists, undergraduate and postgraduate students who are undertaking a degree in the field wanting to learn about how they can support pupils in the classroom or their setting.

Create bespoke therapy sessions for individuals or groups, either as a single occurrence or ongoing input. We can also train parents and staff to deliver these programmes. 


We actively promote quality-first teaching, and can conduct a full or part audit of your staff and school environment to help tailor our programmes to your needs. 

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our training courses will be taking place online via Google Meet. All relevant support information for accessing the course will be sent out to attendees prior to the course.

We accept all major debit/credit cards via Stripe and Paypal. We have an invoice option for education-based settings, schools and organisations.  Please select the Pay by Invoice option via checkout and a member of staff will contact you and send the appropriate department the invoice to pay.
