Overview:

This workshop will introduce you to a range of visual supports and when/how they may be beneficial to the children you work with. It will provide you practical strategies and ideas that you can implement in your setting to support children with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).  The most common type of SEN in schools is SLCN which 24% of children with SEN falling under this category (DfE, 2020). This training will introduce you to a range of visual supports and approaches. You will learn about how and why visuals can be used to support children with SLCN to communicate, understand what they are being asked and develop independence.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Look at why we use visuals – the benefit of using visuals
  • To develop an awareness of different types of visuals
  • To develop an understanding of how visuals can be used within the classroom to support children with complex communication needs
  • To look at a range of visual aids and approaches that support children to communicate, understand what they are being asked and develop independence
  • Understand direct intervention methods
  • Different types of visuals and visual approach and when they might be used
    Real life experiences of SLT is how visuals can support communication and independence
  • Be more confident in implementing and supporting children with communication difficulties to use visuals

What the impact can be if not treated or helped: 

Children with communication difficulties can

  • Become frustrated if they are not able to communicate
  • Have difficulty follow classroom instructions and engaging in classroom learning
  • Become reliant on adults around them from prompts and support

Who is this course ideal for?

Our Using Visuals to Support Communication, is perfect for education and childcare professionals, such as teachers, teaching assistants and SENCO’s. The course is also suitable for speech and language therapists, undergraduate and post graduate students who are undertaking a degree in the field and looking for support and more information.

Where will the course take place?

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our training courses will be taking place online via Google Meets. All relevant support information for accessing the course will be sent out to attendees prior to the workshop.
