Speech Sound Disorder – /d/ and /n/

Annabel Case Study

Speech Sound Disorder – /d/ and /n/

Our SLT, Annabel, has been working with this client since November 2021. The child is currently in Year 1. We have worked within their primary school since September 2020 and have built an excellent rapport with their teachers and SENCOs.

Background

This client has presented a speech sound disorder, with difficulties producing /d/ (dog) and /n/ (nose) sounds.

How did Chattebug help?

This client has received 2 blocks of 1-1 therapy to try to tackle his speech sound disorder. To do so, we started with an articulation approach. This involves working on one sound at a time, before building them into more complex structures, such as words and sentences.

To do this, our therapist worked on modelling sounds to demonstrate the correct mouth shapes and sound production for the child. To aid this, our therapist also used visual diagrams to more clearly demonstrate the tongue placement of these specific speech sounds.

A large part of speech therapy is ensuring that your client is engaged in each session. With children, it is vital that communication is clear to positively reinforce social skills. Annabel helped engage this client by making her therapy approach client-motivated. This included playing a variety of games and encouraging him to talk about his personal interests, such as his dogs!

By the end of his first block, he was successful in producing /d/ (dog) sounds!

Client’s progress to date

Since the client’s sessions with Annabel, they have achieved their targets! Including:

  • Producing ‘d’ and ‘n’ sounds correctly
  • Using ‘d’ sounds in sentences
  • Using ‘n’ sounds in single words
  • Saying his own name (that begins with ‘d’)

Following their success, the client has now been discharged with age-appropriate speech. Chatterbug has even worked with teachers and parents to ensure his language development continues outside of therapy. This included showing them how to support the generalisation of the speech sounds, meaning he will have regular practice and encounters with these sounds!

What has our client said about their therapy?

This client was over the moon with the progress he had made in our sessions. He has even said that when he grows up he wants to be a Speech and Language Therapist!
