Understanding Autism

In the interest of safeguarding, the child has been referred to as ‘Jason’ throughout the case study. 

Our Communication and Language Specialist (CALS), Louise, has been working with Jason for around 8 weeks. We have been in his school setting for just over 3 years.

Background

Jason received his autism diagnosis after presenting difficulties in understanding and interacting with others, building social relationships and knowing appropriate vs inappropriate behaviour. 

He had also been worried about his diagnosis, due to the spreading of misinformation. His understanding was that an autism diagnosis meant he would be removed from his school and family to be put in a specialised institution for mental health! His overall view of his diagnosis was extremely negative and had begun putting pressure on him. 

How did we help Jason?

To help support Jason’s communication skills and behaviour, we first had to aid his understanding of what autism meant. 

To do so, Louise and Jason created posters about what Autism meant, and more importantly what Autism meant for him. 

This meant Jason could think much more positively about his diagnosis. Together, they could then move on to supporting his communication skills.

For his communication skills, they continued with visual aids to support Jason’s understanding of appropriate and inappropriate behaviours. 

Louise also supported Jason’s teachers’ understanding of autism and how they can support him in and outside of class.

Jason’s progress to date: 

Thanks to the intervention and support Louise has provided, Jason has a much more positive view of autism and feels much safer about his diagnosis. 

Louise will continue working with Jason on his communication skills and behaviours, and help to prepare him for secondary school.
