Speech Language and Communication Needs in Autism

Autism Case Study

In the interest of safeguarding, the child has been referred to as ‘Sam’ throughout the case study.

Sam has been working with our therapist Renata on a fortnightly basis since September 2021. Renata has been working within the school since January 2021.

Background

Sam has been receiving Speech and Language Therapy for his Autism. He has presented difficulties in thinking flexibly about situations, such as viewing things from other perspectives or understanding situations has not experienced.

How did Chatterbug help?

We have worked on the student’s understanding of abstract language in his 1:1 therapy sessions using the Language for Behaviour and Emotions (LFBE) programme. With this, he has been working on interpersonal relationships during the social skills group. In the group, he is presented with a challenging social problem. He then had to identify who is involved, how they may feel and why, and come up with a positive solution.

Sam is always eager to share information about his day with our therapist, explaining things that have happened in school. He has even been able to apply the problem-solving approach to problems and situations outside of therapy sessions. He has shown an excellent understanding of these skills and his ability to put them in context.

Client’s progress to date

Sam is now able to view things from other perspectives and think more flexibly about things he might not immediately relate to. He has also expanded his vocabulary surrounding emotions, so can now provide more details descriptions of how other people may feel. He has even demonstrated increased awareness of how people’s feelings might affect their actions.

The sessions have also increased Sam’s confidence in his own communication skills. He is now eager to share his thoughts and ideas during 1:1 therapy. He is more engaged with his learning, even volunteering and putting his hand up to answer harder questions!

What has our client said about their therapy?

Sam has been assessed against his questionnaire from the LFBE. In September 2021, he rated 6 skills as ‘really tricky’ and 6 as ‘sometimes tricky’. In his most recent review 5 skills are now rated as easy, 5 as ‘sometimes tricky’ and only 2 as ‘really tricky’! His perception of his own communication skills and confidence in his ability has vastly improved.
