Speech Sound Disorder – /k/ and Sound Omission
In the interest of safeguarding, the client has been referred to as ‘Alex’ throughout this case study.
Our therapist, Helena, has been working with Alex since December 2019. We have been working within this primary school since September 2018.
Background
Alex demonstrated a Speech Sound Disorder presenting /k/ (cat) sounds being substituted with a /t/ (tap) sound, as well as omitting sounds at the end of words. This speech sound disorder meant teachers, parents and peers were struggling to understand him.
How did Chatterbug help?
To help with his speech sound disorder, Helena helped deliver 1:1 therapy on a weekly basis over the last school year. The different speech sounds required different approaches.
To tackle the /k/ sound substitution, Alex required an articulation approach. This allows us to isolate the sound and model how it is produced with mouth shape, airflow and tongue position. Once the isolated sound has the correct production, it can then be built into words, sentences and eventually speech.
As Alex was also struggling with end-of-word sounds, we were also required to use a phonological approach. This helps target any group of sounds that have similar error patterns and helps build the foundations of phonological rules.
To help engage him, Helena introduced the therapy alongside a variety of games that he enjoyed playing, including Noughts and Crosses, Connect 4 and Swinging Monkeys.
Client’s progress to date
Alex has improved his overall speech sound awareness and has had vast improvement with his /k/ sounds. He has made great strides in improving his communication skills and is now more widely understood by those around him. He is now very excited about moving into his Year 2 class with his new language skills!
What has our client said about their therapy?
Prior to his Speech and Language Intervention, his class teacher had felt she could rarely understand the child. By the end of the academic year, his teacher has found he is generally much easier to understand.
The pupil loves to come to his therapy sessions, has a great laugh with Helena and has been working hard at his speech sounds!
