Speech Sound Disorder /f/ /t/ /r/ and /l/ – Case Study
In the interest of safeguarding, this client has been referred to as ‘Rose’ throughout the case study.
Rose has been working with our Speech and Language Therapist, Maria, since 2020. She has been receiving 1:1 specialist therapy during Reception and Year 1 within the school setting.
Background
Rose has a significant speech sound disorder, struggling with /f/ (fact), /t/ (train), /r/ (run) and /l/ (light) sounds. These difficulties make her hard to understand and have negatively impacted her confidence in speaking publically.
How did Chatterbug help?
Our Speech and Language Therapist, Maria, carried out speech sound intervention using articulation therapy. During this, they targeted the sounds /f/ /t/ /l/ and /r/. As her name contained an /r/, she had difficulties saying it and others had difficulties understanding and calling her the correct name.
For this reason, we made this the first target sound so that she was able to say her name clearly. To do this, Maria tried a variety of methods such as using a mirror to practice curling her tongue back to make the /r/ sound.
Articulation therapy allowed us to isolate certain sounds, and slowly build up the child’s ability to say these. Once Rose could say the single sound, Maria was then able to put the sound in place of syllables, words and sentences. Once the child is confident in doing so, she was able to use the sounds in all contexts of speech, language and communication!
Client’s progress to date
Rose is now able to say all the targeted sounds clearly, so her speech is significantly clearer than before. She has even grown her confidence over the time she has been receiving speech and language input!
What does the client have to say about her progress?
Rose is now able to say her name with a big smile on her face! She is really pleased with her progress and feels much happier knowing she can be more easily understood.
