Selective Mutism Overview Training

In this course, we provide an overview of Selective Mutism. How this condition impacts children and young people and explores the SLT’s remit in the management of it. We will share strategies and techniques that can be used within the education setting.
Selective Mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder, which means that a child essentially have a fear of talking in certain situations and with certain people. The nature of the condition means that if it is not appropriately understood and managed by others, the child or young person’s difficulties may extend to further situations and people, or even extend to other forms of communication.
If a child or young person’s SM becomes ‘entrenched’ in this way, it may be more challenging to overcome. Therefore it is essential for all people in the child or young person’s environment to have an understanding of what SM is and how to support a child and young person with SM.
