Case Study: Speech Delay Disorder and Language Difficulties Impacting Education and Everyday Conversation
In the interest of safeguarding, this child has been referred to as ‘Sam’ throughout this case study on complex speech.
Background
When we first started working with Sam (ages 5-7), their speech sound difficulties made it challenging for them to express themselves clearly, sometimes leading to frustration. Sam also found abstract language difficult to understand, which impacted their ability to follow classroom content and, in turn, affected their confidence. Occasionally, Sam expressed feelings of self-doubt, saying things like, “I can’t do that sound, it’s too hard.”
How Sam has benefited from Chatterbug’s support at school
Sam has made significant progress in their speech development after attending a block of intervention sessions. We focused on ‘s’ clusters, and Sam is now working on generalising this skill into everyday conversation, making their speech almost age appropriate.
Sam’s language skills have also been supported. We were able to provide a bespoke intervention programme that school staff were able to implement. These programmes have focused on strengthening Sam’s understanding of abstract language. In 2023, Sam was working at Blank Level 2 and has since progressed towards Blank Levels 3 and 4, demonstrating meaningful development in his comprehension skills.
Positive Outcomes
Sam’s enthusiasm for learning flourished during our sessions, as he actively engaged and expressed excitement about his progress. His joy was evident in his words, often exclaiming, “You’re the best!” and eagerly anticipating the next session.
This shows the great impact Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) and educators can have working collaboratively to support children and young people reach the goals.
