Case Study: Supporting Jamie, an Autistic Gestalt Language Processing Child in Developing His Communication Skills
In the interest of safeguarding, this child has been referred to as ‘Jamie’ throughout this case study.
Background
Jamie was referred to Chatterbug as he was experiencing difficulties across all areas of language and communication. These included expressive and receptive language and attention and listening difficulties as well as social communication differences
Jamie has a diagnosis of autism and had experienced a virus as a newborn, which led to a brain injury. At referral, he found it difficult to follow age-appropriate instructions and to engage in adult-led activities, often preferring solitary play. Jamie communicated mainly using repeated phrases from television programmes, which led to the identification that he is a Gestalt Language Processor (GLP).Gestalt language development is a natural and valid way of learning language, where individuals begin by learning and using whole scripts or chunks before breaking them down into individual words and phrases.
How Chatterbug provided support
Jamie received a holistic package of support through Chatterbug, which included:
- Detailed speech and language assessments
- Observations within the classroom environment
- Modelling sessions for school staff
- Personalised reports and therapy programmes shared with both school and home
These therapy programmes offered insight into Jamie’s communication profile, highlighting both his strengths and areas where further support could be beneficial. They also provided information about GLP, the stage Jamie was currently navigating, and how the adults around him could best support his communication journey. Importantly, staff received direct modelling of Jamie’s communication targets to help them feel confident and capable in their delivery.
Jamie also took part in both group and individual sessions with a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) from Chatterbug. During these sessions, approaches such as Bucket Time were introduced and then demonstrated to school staff to ensure they could continue the work consistently.
Staff reported that these collaborative sessions increased their understanding of GLP, the reasoning behind specific interventions, and how they could effectively support Jamie within the classroom. This led to a more inclusive and responsive learning environment tailored to Jamie’s communication style.
Jamie’s progress to date
Since receiving input from Chatterbug, Jamie has made notable progress in his speech, language, and communication skills:
- He can now participate in short, engaging adult-led tasks
- His receptive language has developed—he is able to follow simple instructions and understand some basic ‘wh’ questions
- His expressive language has broadened—Jamie is now using a wider range of gestalts, incorporating different grammatical features to share his wants, needs, and ideas
All of this growth has taken place within a six-month period, reflecting both Jamie’s capabilities and the impact of consistent, affirming support from adults who understand his unique way of processing language.
