In the evolving landscape of speech and language therapy (SLT), an intriguing phenomenon is emerging: neurodivergent speech and language therapists are redefining the norms and bringing exceptional value to the field. Their brain functions differently, allowing for innovative approaches and a deep empathy with clients who share similar neurological profiles. Let’s delve into the world of these unique professionals, revealing how their distinct perspectives enhance their therapeutic approach.
Diversity and Neurodiversity
When discussing diversity, our focus often gravitates towards aspects such as gender, race, and ethnicity, yet one tends to evade the spotlight: Neurodiversity. This concept centres on recognising the distinctions in brain function and diverse neurodevelopmental conditions like Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and other developmental disorders.
A Unique Perspective from Therapists Who Think Differently
Neurodivergent Speech and Language Therapists play a pivotal role in this narrative, offering an intimate understanding of the intricacies and strengths associated with various neurological profiles. Their personal experiences significantly contribute to their capacity to formulate unconventional yet highly effective strategies, rendering therapy sessions more deeply resonant and impactful.

Take, for example, a Neurodivergent Speech and Language Therapist who shared their insights: ‘I can speak for the ADHD side – I think having ADHD makes me more inclined to be creative (not to say, of course, that being more creative is something exclusive to neurodivergent individuals). For instance, in speech therapy sessions, my creativity helps me think of alternative or even unusual ways that children can elicit specific sounds. I also approach therapy activities innovatively, such as using games like Dobble to enhance a child’s vocabulary or category naming abilities. Additionally, in team meetings (outside a therapy context), my distinct perspective allows me to generate alternative suggestions.’
Championing Neurodiversity from Within: Leadership with Lived Experience
Embracing neurodiversity starts at the top. At Chatterbug, 75% of our senior leadership team are individuals with lived experiences (LEx). Their deep comprehension of both the challenges and achievements experienced by neurodivergent individuals aligns perfectly with our mission: to positively impact the lives of those with neurodivergence and demonstrate that the traits that make us unique can be our greatest strengths.
Serving as examples
Neurodivergent speech and language therapists are a shining example of the benefits of embracing diverse minds. Their different way of brain functioning not only augments their professional skills but also fosters a more inclusive, empathetic approach to therapy. As we continue to value and integrate neurodiversity across all sectors, the influence of these trailblazing professionals will undoubtedly expand, creating a more understanding and inclusive society.
